FAQ: Hidden Compartment Furniture with NFC and RFID — Questions and Answers 2026

We answer the most frequent questions from our UK and European customers about furniture with hidden compartments and the NFC and RFID opening systems from Beetle Wood®.

How the NFC and RFID system works

What is the practical difference between NFC and RFID?

Technically, NFC (Near Field Communication) is a subset of the RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) standard operating at 13.56 MHz with a maximum range of 5 cm. Practical difference: NFC is compatible with modern smartphones (iPhone from iPhone 7, all Android with NFC since 2014) and smart wristbands, while the RFID system uses the dedicated cards supplied with the furniture. All our furniture pieces accept both formats simultaneously.

Can I open the hidden compartment with my iPhone or Android smartphone?

Yes, without any additional app. Models with NFC opening open with any NFC smartphone that has been pre-registered in the system. The registration procedure takes less than 2 minutes using one of the 3 master cards included in the box.

Does the RFID lock have a battery? What happens when it runs flat?

Our RFID and NFC systems are entirely passive: they operate by electromagnetic induction, like a contactless bank card. No battery, no components that degrade over time. The service life of the opening system is identical to that of the furniture itself.

Why no battery is a critical advantage

The absence of a battery eliminates the main vulnerability of conventional electronic locks: the emergency PIN mode that activates when the battery dies — the preferred entry point for anyone who knows the technique.

What happens if I lose my RFID card?

Every Beetle Wood® lock comes with 3 programmed RFID cards and can register up to 10 devices. If you lose a card, you can deactivate it individually using another valid card — no technician needed, no lock replacement.

System security

Can the RFID card be cloned with a reader bought online?

Standard unencrypted RFID cards can be cloned with £15-30 readers. This is why our locks use an encrypted communication protocol with mutual authentication: without the system-specific encryption key, a cloned card produces no effect whatsoever.

Delivery, warranty and returns

Delivery times for the UK and Europe?

UK: 7-14 working days. Rest of Europe: 10-21 working days. All furniture is delivered in high-density foam protective packaging. RFID cards and the programming manual are dispatched in a separate envelope for security reasons.

What warranty is included?

Every Beetle Wood® piece includes 2 years of statutory warranty (EU Directive 2019/771) and an additional 5-year warranty specific to the NFC/RFID opening system. English-language technical support with no intermediaries.

Can I return the furniture if I am not satisfied?

14 days right of withdrawal from the date of receipt for online purchases. The furniture must be in perfect condition in its original packaging.
